Sources and sinks for atmospheric N2O
نویسنده
چکیده
Observations of the temporal and spatial distribution of N,.O in solution are not yet sufficient topermit quantitative assessment of the role of the ocean in the budget of atmospheric N,.O. Consideration of the global nitrogen cycle suggests hat the land should be the primary source of N20. The gas is removed in the atmosphere by photolysis and by reaction with O(•D), and there may be additional sinks in the ocean.

Nitrous oxide is an important greenhouse gas and ozone-depleting-substance. Its sources are diffuse and poorly characterized, complicating efforts to understand anthropogenic impacts and develop mitigation policies. Online, spectroscopic analysis of N2O isotopic composition can provide continuous measurements at high time resolution, giving new insight into N2O sources, sinks, and chemistry. We...

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a powerful greenhouse gas and a major cause of stratospheric ozone depletion, yet its sources and sinks remain poorly quantified in the oceans. We used isotope tracers to directly measure N2O reduction rates in the eastern tropical North Pacific. Because of incomplete denitrification, N2O cycling rates are an order of magnitude higher than predicted by current models in s...
